WoW Moviewatch: Nobody's Quest Episode 6

Well, this is it. The final episode of Nobody's Quest. It's been a thrill to see this weekly series, and I'm a little sad to see it end. Ninth Batter is being very responsible by saying he wants to do more, but can't promise it due to other responsibilities. This sort of thing does take an immense amount of time, so I understand. But I can hope.

This was a good wrap-up. I was surprised how satisfied I felt with the ending. I tend to shy away from love stories. It's not that I think they're bad, it's just that they can go awry pretty quickly. But with a healthy dose of humor and some fun little puns, Ninth kept the whole plot on their rails. Like I said, this was fun stuff. I hope we see more. Interested in the wide world of machinima? Given the interplay with the official forums, this series of videos could go really somewhere. The format needs to upgrade a bit to keep it fresh, but I dig the overall gimmick. WoW Moviewatch: Nobody's Quest: Episode 5

We return to the exposition and story-driven drama of Nobody's Quest with Ring of Fire. The heroes have finally discovered the final villain, the goal of their quest, and the precipice of their final showdown. With a little betrayal and a lot of confusion, Mortimer reaches a startling realization about what's really going on.

I've enjoyed this series immensely. I hope Ninth Batter feels emboldened to keep going after this storyline. WoW Moviewatch: War of the Ancients - Well of Eternity

This is a trailer for War of the Ancients - Well of Eternity. If you've been around for a while, then you know we usually try to avoid trailers. (And I point that out every time we break down and do post a trailer.) It's not that we don't like trailers; we love them! But the problem is that they frequently don't produce a final movie. All we're left with is that trailer, stretching into eternity.

I hope that doesn't happen to War of the Ancients - Well of Eternity. Based on the novels by Knaak, this movie promises some dragon lore, well considered plot, and gorgeous graphics. Take the time to check it out, and encourage Bloodlord to finish the video. I have faith and hope that we'll see the final version.

Slightly Impressive continues spoofing the television hits of Azeroth with another comedy video. It's been fascinating watching Griff pick up his craft over the last year or two, both in terms of his technical skills and the tightening of his dialogue.

Also, let's take a moment to acknowledge his small league of voice actors. Pirtuk, Aislyn, LilAis, and Gilg seem to put in incredible effort toward supporting Slightly Impressive. WoW Moviewatch: Hard Like Heroic

Work Warning: There's some allusions and innuendo in this video. Welcome to another exciting round of Staff Picks in Moviewatch. This week, we'll be reviewing Hard Like Heroic by Nyhm, a particular favorite of Daniel Whitcomb. Why Hard Like Heroic?

Nhym's still one of my favorite WoW machinimists of all time, repping the BC era warlock gear and spinning really funny parodies. As someone who played a Warlock pretty heavily in the BC era and still keeps her in skulls and spikes, I appreciate that. I also like his honest singing voice, better than it was on the I PuG KZ (another great video), but still... authentic for lack of a better word. The video's also full of fun imagery, a bridge by Summergale (Troll Shaman supremacy), and after the video, you get a bonus dig at Illegal Danish.

I can't believe this video is 6 years old. It feels like yesterday I was humming it while cruising around Outland. It's hilarious how much of the humor is still good. WoW Moviewatch: Illegal Danish Super Snacks

We're continuing the Staff Picks series of WoW Moviewatch with a special selection by Kristin. Not only is Illegal Danish Super Snacks by Myndflame one of the earliest legends of machinima, it remains to this day one of our favorite videos.

The Danish video, as nobody calls it, is unique in a few ways. First, it's blend of comedy and story make it interesting to follow and a laugh to watch. Second, it spawned a whole series of jokes and references that flourished through the years of WoW. While some of the jokes might not make sense to newer players, those of us in the nostalgia circuit will thrill to hear those dreadful words... "Arcanite Reaper, hooooo!" WoW Moviewatch: Nobody's Quest Episode 4

The fourth episode of Nobody's Quest brings us some more sweet, sweet, difficult-to-animate combat. Not only does Ninth Batter step up with more humor and plot action, but we finally see the dark heritage of our gnome protagonist. More importantly, we get some conflict with the villain.

It'll be interesting to see where this story ends up going. There's been such a lack of story-driven machinima for so long, I hope that Ninth is getting enough of a reception to keep going for a while. WoW Moviewatch: The History of WoW

I'm not sure I've ever encountered a comparison of The History of WoW to an on-stage production about cooking meatloaf. So, in terms of that, this video is a new one on me. As soon as you enter that kind of metaphor territory, though, you risk bordering on coming across as bitter and resentful. I think Nervous Orca mostly avoids that issue but I did wonder how long it'd be before the rage came blistering through.

The video is full of decent jokes and good moments. But the jokes do drag on a tiny bit too long, especially with the relatively rough animation. Still, that constructive criticism shouldn't hold Orca back because this is a pretty good video. It could have used a strong final punchline, but the whole thing moved in a good direction. WoW Moviewatch: Attack on Horde

Just uploaded earlier today, Attack on Horde is a different kind of WoW machinima -- it's a parody of the opening for the show Attack on Titan, using WoW models in place of the actual characters. It's kind of like the really cool intros guild Fifth Element does for their kill videos, only there's no kill involved -- just sweet, sweet butt-kicking of Horde. The video stands alone by itself as a pretty good machinima, I really like the use of the music and the combination of both models and brief flashes of panels from the WoW comic series.

But the cool part is checking out how well it lines up to the original. Youtube user Bain Williams not only put the video above up for viewing, he also posted a side-by-side comparison to the original intro for the anime, so you can see for yourself how well it matched up! I don't know about the rest of you, but I like this trend of intros-turned-machinima. Nice work, Bain!

WoW Moviewatch: Resurrection

Resurrection is an old movie. It was one of the early generation of very long, story-driven machinima. Created in part for a contest, this version of Resurrection ran a mere 10 minutes. But if you liked it, then Bear on a Trampoline (the creator) suggested you check out the full half-hour version. 30 minutes is a long time for a machinima, but it was generally worth your time.

Resurrection was recommended for a re-feature by ArcVekter, who recalls it as one of the first machinima that inspired his love of the game. WoW Moviewatch: A message from the War Chief

A message from the War Chief (sic) is the newest video from Ryan Cant. In it, Garrosh desperately tries to convinced the harried, oppressed members of the Horde that everything's fine. Nobody's beating a rebellious path to Orgrimmar, bent on the complete dispossession of the standing despot. Nope, it's just a little thing off in a distant land, nothing to worry about here.

I enjoyed the video, and I think it's a good idea. The only thing that distracted me was Garrosh's voice. When you use a comedic voice, you generally do it to make the character somewhat a buffoon. I had the sense that the video might have been a little better played straight, with the idea that Garrosh was actually trying to convince us that everything's fine. One of the defining aspects of the death knight class is their inimitable voice. That hollow, Darth-esque echo lends a creepy underpinning to the characters. Episode 3 of Nobody's Quest opens up with that subject and then plunges back into the story.

I'm digging how NinthBatter is stepping into character development. Exposition and exploration can be important parts of a character's life. But rather than get trapped in the sticky mess of exposition, Ninth immediately launches into a plot twist and story progression. WoW Moviewatch: Squirrel in My Pants

The title of this new video by Off the Air is actually Squirrel Challenge, but I've already come to think of it as Squirrel in My Pants. The song is from Phineas and Ferb, and apparently involved woodland creatures running rampant through trousers. I guess that's a thing that happens.

As the story goes, a commenter challenged the guild to create a music video to the song. Off the Air knocked this out of the park. The video is huge fun, complete with a dancing troupe of orcs carrying the chorus. Whether or not the challenge was actually intended to be difficult, Off the Air used it to create one of their best videos yet. WoW Moviewatch: Frame of Mind

Frame of Mind by Slashdance has been lurking around the internet since 2007. For all that the video has some years under its belt, it's still as entertaining and charming as the day it was released. With a chill but emotional soundtrack, tone-perfect graphics, and subtle storyline, Frame of Mind looks like an illustrated guide to making a good WoW music video.

If you're an aspiring machinimator, take the time to check out the video on its YouTube page. Slashdance took the time to liberally annotate the video with behind the scenes notes. WoW Then and Now is more than just a pleasant romp down memory lane. It rips the rose-colored glasses off for a stark reminder that not everything used to be so easy.
