Breakfast Topic: Is World of Warcraft your first MMO?

Breakfast Topic Is World of Warcraft your first MMOWe're nothing if not persistent -- the typical WoW Insider reader has played WoW longer than your average bear. A recent reader poll found that 44 percent of readers have played since classic WoW, with another 29 percent following closely behind during The Burning Crusade. But was WoW your first MMO, or did you step into Azeroth from Norrath or another MMO world?

If you played something else before WoW, what did you play? Did you MMO before WoW was launched, or did you come over during the WoW era? World of Warcraft summer sale

World of Warcraft summer saleThe entire of World of Warcraft has gone on sale, and for once, the non-ironic use of the word "epic" is entirely justified. For this week only, you can get from naught to Mists of Pandaria for $30, or €30 or £25, depending on your local currency, and this is a pretty amazing deal when you consider the regular prices. As the EU store is still only handling digital goods, those will only be available in the EU as downloads. The US, however, can pick up the boxed versions for the same price, which is pretty remarkable.

Don't forget that the Battle Chest has included Wrath of the Lich King for some time, so you're not missing out there. This is a really, really cheap way to get yourself a character leveled with Recruit-a-Friend, and indeed to pick up an Obsidian Nightwing into the mix. Or, of course, get your friends involved in the game!

Jimmy Fallon's Late Night: We are the World of Warcraft

In honor of Video Game Week, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon's team collaborated with Felicia Day, Chris Hardwick and the WoW community to put a video together of a parody song, as you can see above. The video was aired last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and shows off not only the three aforementioned stars, but also several podcasters, streamers, and content creators, all members of our WoW community.

As one of those people, specifically the one swaying gently with the gryphon plushy, I can give you a little bit of background! Blizzard sent out an email a couple of weeks back, asking for people to create a video of themselves singing along to the chorus. There were no other stipulations, and, as Blizzard had no control whatsoever over the finished product, there were no guarantees that your clip would be included. And, of course, we had to keep it under our hats. Luckily, they didn't use our audio. Hope you like it, I was honored to be included!

Breakfast Topic How long have you played WoWAfter eight years of World of Warcraft, it's definitely time to shift the goal posts on defining what qualifies a player as being old school. How long does someone have to have played WoW before you consider them a seasoned player? How long before you consider them an old timer? Does having played the game for some period of time give you confidence that a player is probably experienced and knowledgeable about the areas of the game he or she commonly plays?

What about you -- how long have you played World of Warcraft? And would you consider yourself an experienced player?

Around Azeroth: The last island in the world

Around Azeroth The last island in the world SATURDAYSubmitter Taedran of Guilty as Charged on Silvermoon (US-A) recently sent me ... quite a few screenshots. As in literally several hundred. I think that's considered justification for homicide in Texas. Anyway, several of Taedran's pictures featured zoomed-out high-definition pictures of certain zones in the game. This one features the isolated (and unvisitable, except for newbie goblins) Lost Isles. It seems like a paradise. Why did we ever leave?
Want to see your own screenshot here? Send it to aroundazeroth@wowinsider.com. We strongly prefer full-sized pictures with no UI or names showing. Include "Azeroth" in the subject line to ensure your submission dodges email spam filters; if you'd like to be credited, also include your name, guild and realm. Method takes down Ra-Den for world first

Method take World First RaDenThe world first race is now genuinely over, Method have killed Ra-Den on 25-man, with no bugs or glitches, and a full 25-man raid's worth of health. Method Raider Blatty says on his facebook page:
It's over. We'd predicted that we would get him this week, and after two pulls it was done. We are now the only people in the world to have killed the last boss of tier 15.
After the previously reported issues experienced by Asia's ? ?, who apparently switched to 10-man and managed to get Ra-Den to bug out, there was a hotfix implemented to prevent the issue where Ra-Den was apparently able to be kept from gaining many of his abilities.

Many people thought it might be the case that the limited attempts would therefor be removed, or at least that the race would carry on for a while longer. Now that he's down, we can look forward to Method's videos showing off the fight and kill, and see what all the fuss has been about. Method have taken this last boss down ahead of Paragon, who have led the race all along, albeit in the 10-man size, and ahead of Blood Legion, Russia's Eksorsus, the EU's Sanitas and Envy, as well as the US guild, Midwinter, all of whom were on 12/13.

Congratulations to Method!

"World First" Ra-den?

World First RadenManaflask, ardent follower of the World First race, has reported that the final bonus boss of this tier has been defeated by a Chinese guild named ? ?. So why the question mark? Manaflask has looked deeper into the kill, and it appears that there's something fishy afoot.

Asia's guilds are already considered to be on a separate racecourse, so to speak, to the EU and NA guilds we habitually report on, thanks to their increased item levels and higher HP bosses, but this is far beyond that. Manaflask reports the following:

Apparently ? ? switched to 10 man after downing Lei Shen in 25 and that made all of Ra-Den's abilities work as it if were 10 man (except they had 25 people there fighting him) [...] The guild supposedly reported the issue to Blizzard so there isn't any actual exploiting going on, just a bug due to the different way in which 10s and 25s are handled in Asia (different lockout etc).
What's more, and this is unconfirmed so should be treated as such, theories have surfaced that there is a bug with the boss. The guild's raid leader is quoted as having said that they also "met something usual in the encounter". We assume they mean unusual, and Manaflask also has theories that, by preventing Ra-Den from reaching his adds, he is prevented from gaining any of his abilities. They also mentioned that Ra-Den turns friendly at 5.5%, which seems likely to be an intentional feature, given what we've heard already in sound files and the like.

The guild have, as mentioned above, reported this to Blizzard, and are convinced that, given all the aforementioned, their kill shouldn't be considered valid. Ion Hazzikostas previously asserted that if he was badly bugged the limited attempts would be lifted, but that seems unlikely at this late stage. We will wait and see, but for now, he's down.

The Queue: My World of Warcraft and 151 nations

The Queue My World of Warcraft and 151 nations
Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky (@adamholisky) will be your host today.

There's no end to the number of people who will tell you how to play this game. None. Even here, despite having a large audience of varying playstyles, we can let things slip through about the only way to do things.

You must raid to experience WoW, you must PvP, you must level your pets from 1-25 to be any sort of serious pet battler.

But you know what?

We're all full of a bunch of hot air. At the end of the day all we're able to do is give you what we think is the most fun way to enjoy WoW based on our experiences. The same goes for Ghostcrawler, Zarhym, Neth, Bashiok, etc... All they can do is tell you how they enjoy it, how they experience it. At the end of the day WoW is a highly personal experience, one that humanity hasn't had before. It's an entire virtual world, whose population would be the 91st largest country in the world (down from 74). Let that put the subscriber drop in perspective for you.

There are 151 real life nations that are smaller than WoW. And none of that matters, because it's your World of Warcraft. As in the rest of your life, make of it what you will.

Paul asked:

The latest scuttlebutt reported on the idea of a WoW film was that the project is in danger of being scrapped (yellow/red lighted) in the wake of the latest game news. It'll probably depend on what the future news is, but even the devs indicated they expect the population to continue declining over the next year; we'll probably never see a WoW film come to light.

I saw that report from a movie blog of some sorts come across the news wire a few days ago. After reading it I looked for a source for a good half hour. I couldn't find ANYTHING.

There is zero indication that the WoW movie is in any sort of danger. And think for a minute too... what would make people want to get back into WoW? What about a major Hollywood blockbuster? That'd probably do something to the sub numbers...

Sergel asked:

Question out of curiosity: how do you balance WoW with your significant other? Obviously they are priority, but do you two have an agreement that you'll only play a certain amount, or you don't want to be interrupted at certain times (eg. raids), etc.? Or do they play with you, and it becomes a mutual activity for the two of you?

My wife doesn't play WoW. She tried it a few times at my request, but didn't see the draw to it. Video Games for her go about as far as Mario and that's it (which is great, we have a blast with the Wii). The balance is a few fold.

First, I have a laptop, so when she's just vegging out infront of the TV, I might be rocking the laptop with WoW loaded up, or whatever video game I'm currently obsessing over. We're right next to each other, and we're still idly chatting, etc etc...

Second, I schedule a couple times a week I'm going to go gaming with friends. To me there's no difference between going to a baseball game or a bowling league and hopping on WoW and sitting in mumble. It's all a good time and she can hear me laughing away with everyone. She schedules a couple times a week to go and do other stuff too, like choir rehearsals or girls nights, etc... It's all about communication.

Third, and most importantly, I don't ever let a video game get in the way of us. If she's having a bad day and needs my attention, then guess what? Farming takes a back seat. And if she's still upset around the time the raid comes around? Welp, bai friends. My wife takes the cake. It's no different than any other activity. Treat it like that, exercise good judgment, and you'll be set.

Hemmtt asked:

If I'm on a low pop server and want to make a group to kill Nalak, what's the best way to pull in characters from other servers or join a group forming on a different server?

Hit up OpenRaid, that's your best bet for all sorts of cross-realm fun. It's really a great site, and I love that people use it. Have questions about the World of Warcraft? The WoW Insider crew is here with The Queue, our daily Q&A column. Leave your questions in the comments, and we'll do our best to answer 'em! World of Warcraft loses 1.3M subscribers since February, down to 8.3M

WoW loses 13 million subscribers since Feb down to 8 milToday's Activision-Blizzard financial reports states World of Warcraft took a subscriber hit this quarter, losing 1.3 million players since February.

The loss brings the total number of WoW players down to 8.3 million, its lowest level since the launch of the Burning Crusade expansion in 2007. Subscriber levels have fallen by about a third since WoW's post-Cataclysm peak of 12 million subscribers. The loss is hardly unusual -- you have to remember that WoW is a 9-year-old game, and we're at a pretty uninteresting time in the expansion cycle.

Have we mentioned yet that we're really excited to see if Blizzard is announcing a new MMO at BlizzCon? Tags: activision, breaking, expansion, numbers, subscriber, subscriber-numbers, subscription, subscription-numbers, World-of-Warcraft
