Breakfast Topic: Whatever happened to healing assignments?

Breakfast Topic Whatever happened to healing assignmentsA few nights ago, I was casually playing my mistweaver monk when I saw a pick-up group forming for Mogushan Vaults. He wasn't really that well geared, but I figured "why not?" and jumped in. Since this was my first time joining a raid on this character, I tried to be prepared; I ate my spirit food, drank a flask, and asked the raid leader for healing assignments. His response? Well, parts of it are unprintable, but the gist is that "assignments are lame" and "nobody uses them anymore."

I admit, I'm not the best at paying attention to what my healers are doing, other than thanking them when they repeatedly cover for my slow reaction times, or lighting our tree druid on fire. (Ulla, if you're reading this, it was the warlock. Really!) Thinking back, though, the last time I remember healing assignments really being a "thing" was Chimaeron, and nothing since then.

Understandably, heroic raiders still have assignments as they have to keep people from dying every second, but what about the rest of us? It seems like assignments have died out: do you think this is a bad thing or a good thing? Breakfast Topic: Do unlikely race/role combos disturb you?

Breakfast Topic Do unlikely racerole combos disturb youGnome warrior tanks disturb me. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I just can't hang with a gnome in this role. Especially in PvP content, their size relative to other PC races sends any semblance of reality out the window. In raids, their small size makes them annoyingly more difficult to spot. But perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this role/race combo to me is how much less confidence-inspiring these tiny tidbits of tanking are to me than, say, an orc warrior. I'll follow my orc warrior anywhere, even the proverbial cliff, because I trust him to fight off the baddies once we've rezzed at the bottom. But a gnome? Sorry, guys and gals. You're like Chicklets chewing gum. It's just not working for me.

I have a friend who doesn't like to see human males in magic-using roles. He has a pretty classic view of spellcasters as refined in both intellect and physique, and he just doesn't enjoy seeing WoW's rather beefy-looking male models flinging spells in the field.

Whether your reasons are aesthetic or practical, have you found any particular race/class combinations to feel a bit dodgy? Is there a race/roll combination in game that just doesn't work for you? Breakfast Topic: Your favorite alt(s)

Sure, we all have our main character on whom we lavish both time and attention. We take the utmost care to gear them up: reforging, enchanting, gemming, and transmogrifing every piece of equipment to perfection. We read forums and class blogs and make sure we're up to date on the latest gameplay techniques and boss strategies to make the most of our beloved main when we're playing.

But sometimes? Sometimes you just want a break from all of that. Sometimes you want to play an alt, running through uncharted territory with an unfamiliar class. This, of course, is the draw of the alt. And for some of us, one isn't even enough. So tell us, readers: what's your favorite alt getaway? A specific character, faction, or class? Or is it just anything different, for a change of pace? Breakfast Topic: Would you play WoW in an offline mode?

Breakfast Topic Would you play WoW in an offline modeAzeroth is filled with players who rarely interact with their fellow citizens. Perfectly content to mind their own business and their own goals, they group infrequently and socialize rarely. Sometimes their introverted ways are dictated by personal scheduling or other playstyle constraints. Often, it's a matter of personal choice. So it stands to reason that some solo players might actually prefer to play the game in a setting removed from other players –- an offline mode, so to speak.

Me, I would miss the living, breathing world around me if Azeroth were offline. Even when I don't choose to group up or converse with others, I enjoy seeing other players going about their own business and watching guildchat burble across my chat box. I'll occasionally refresh a character that's been stranded on a realm my friends have moved away from, but I never last long before I drift back to a realm with friends.

Would you leap at the chance to play WoW in isolation with an offline mode? What if you couldn't switch back and forth, so that once you began playing offline, that character had to stay offline? Breakfast Topic: Is World of Warcraft your first MMO?

Breakfast Topic Is World of Warcraft your first MMOWe're nothing if not persistent -- the typical WoW Insider reader has played WoW longer than your average bear. A recent reader poll found that 44 percent of readers have played since classic WoW, with another 29 percent following closely behind during The Burning Crusade. But was WoW your first MMO, or did you step into Azeroth from Norrath or another MMO world?

If you played something else before WoW, what did you play? Did you MMO before WoW was launched, or did you come over during the WoW era? Breakfast Topic: When does your raid group call progression "done"?

Breakfast Topic When does your raid group call progression 'done'World of Warcraft has become episodic entertainment for many players today: Hop in for a couple of months to see the content, run up a few characters, then dip into the Raid Finder before dropping out again until the next content patch. That's all fine and good for the solo types, but what if you're an integral member of a raiding group? What happens to the raid when members start deciding they've seen enough sights this expansion, thank you very much?

Blizzard turns out new content at a fast enough clip these days that many groups never run out of raiding content before the next batch arrives. Problem solved. But what happens when your group tops off the current tier before the new stuff hits? Is there a point at which your leader declares the current tier "complete"? Does your group move on to heroic mode, or are you satisfied once you've run normal? How long does your raiding group keep farming? Do you typically drop out or change characters once you've gotten what you personally want from a raid? What happens to players who haven't gotten everything they want from a tier yet? Breakfast Topic: Tweeting about WoW

We like talking about WoW, which is probably how we got here in the first place. But when we aren't on WoW Insider talking about WoW, sometimes it just means we're talking about WoW somewhere else. And frequently that somewhere else is Twitter, where you won't just find us on @WoWInsider, but also personal accounts. But of course we need people to talk to, so it's a good thing a bunch of Blizzard employees are on active on the microblogging site, too.

And, of course, there are plenty of you lovely people there with us, too. So tell us, readers: do you tweet about the World of Warcraft? And because we're always interested in new people to follow, do you have any favorite WoW-related accounts that you follow? Breakfast Topic: What you wish was part of WoW

We all enjoy WoW at least enough that we're still playing it, but that doesn't mean any of us think it's the perfect game. We all have our complaints, even when some of those complaints are just features or story elements we wish Blizzard would add to the game. Will we ever get to see more of Medivh? Will the Titans ever be back? Will Blizzard ever introduce more hero classes? (And if they are, can we suggest looking to Warcraft III's demon hunters and shadow hunters?) Will Hemet Nesingwary ever run out of hunts to send us on?

That last one's a trick question, because we're pretty sure Nesingwary will never run out of targets or willing folk to send off to hunt them. (We just can't say no to the experience points.) But if you had say over what Blizzard was going to be adding to the game... just what would you ask for? Breakfast Topic: Zookeeping

Have you been on a World Safari to catch every battle pet in the Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, Outland, Northred, and Pandaria? If so, you've recently been given the chance to finally receive your Zookeeper title with the seasonal Qiraji Guardling pet arriving in Azeroth last week. So tell us, young zookeepers, have you caught your Qiraji yet? Or has, perhaps, this lengthy achievement has tried your patience until you've given up?

But even if you've given up, it may still be a good idea to go out to Silithus and pick up this pet: that way if you decide to pick up collecting again, you won't have to wait until summer to get another one. Unfortunately for those who didn't pick up a Snowy Owl over the winter, the Zookeeper title will have to wait another year. But whatever your situation: how are your zookeeping adventures going? Community Blog Topic: What is your favorite playable race?

Community Blog Topic What is your favorite raceFor this week's Community Blog Topic, we're going to talk about race. Which one is your favorite playable race? For me it's the Forsaken. I love how tragic their backstory is. I love the concept of a zombie race that isn't mindless. And I love their leader, The Banshee Queen, The Dark Lady, Lady Sylvanas Windrunner.

I really love their starting quests and I particularly think Silverpine Forest is brilliant. Everyone should play through it at least once. Even if you aren't into playing Horde, it's the only way to get the full story of the worgen -- which I agree isn't quite fair to the ex-Gilneans.

I also love getting into arguments about whether or not they are evil. As I said in that post, I consider them more amoral than immoral. I also think that Sylvanas's current way of increasing the population makes perfect sense for them. It's an excellent use of the otherwise unemployed Val'kyr and why let all of those dead bodies go to waste?

The odd thing is that I actually don't have any high level undead characters. My max level characters are a tauren, a blood elf and a pandaren. That's partially due to the classes I play. Forsaken can't be druids or paladins. They can be monks, but I hopped on the panda bandwagon when monks were released and didn't look back.

I have a mage who is closing in on 90, but she's a goblin -- having jumped on that bandwagon back when goblins were fresh and new. This is all guilting me into either playing one of my lower level undead alts or creating a new one.

So what is your favorite playable race? Is it also the race of your main character? Do you have several characters of your preferred race, or are you disloyal like me? Why do you prefer your favorite race? Blog your answer and put a link into the comments below or just respond by leaving a comment. We'll spotlight some of the responses next week. Community Blog Topic Results: Favorite class and spec

Community Blog Topic Results Favorite class and specLast week, we asked "What is your favorite class and spec?" We got many answers from altoholics who couldn't choose to enthusiastic odes. Here's what everyone had to say, listed in order of popularity.

Hunter

AlternativeChat over at ALT:ernative says

If it's Hunter shaped, I'm going to play it.
She favors the Beast Mastery spec due to its utility in soloing and farming as well as its pet buffs granting access to all DPS and crowd control abilities.

AdmiringAzeroth agrees but plays Survival as primary spec. The commenters favored hunters overall, mostly the beast master spec. I suspect that part of the reason people are so passionate for this class is that the hunter community is so strong and close-knit. As AlternativeChat says

The hunter community is one of the strongest and most entertaining parts of Warcraft: the people who play my class with me are passionate, voracious and dedicated to their chosen path.

Mage

Fire mage was the second most popular class/spec. MusedMoose went as far as to putting his passion to song, sung to the old school Spiderman theme:

Fire mage, fire mage
Burn you back to the iron age
Does that hurt? You'll die soon
Combustion makes you go boom.
Look out! Here comes the fire mage...

Fire mage, fire mage
Friendly neighborhood fire mage
Cut me down, to the ground?
Cauterize means I'll stick around.
Flame on! Here comes the fire mage...

In a heated fight, come at me in a dash
With Inferno Blast, you're a pile of ash!

Fire mage, fire mage
Pyroblast you right off the page
Living Bomb, Flamestrike too,
Was a raid, now a bar-be-que
Look out! Wherever there's a bad guy
It's now a well-done stir-fry
Thanks to the fire mage!

Shaman

The Shaman was well represented, with enhancement being the favorite. Even though the class has had its ups and downs, as snarkygoldfish said, it's still a passionate favorite for many. Also, lightning is cool.

Druid

There was much love for druids, but the most affection was for a spec that doesn't exist anymore: the old feral bear/cat spec, as expressed by dreamweaver7x:

Paired with a Resto offspec (back when we were still Trees, and healed exclusively with HoTs) and three sets of gear in my bags, this was and still is my favorite way to play the game. Too bad this entire class/spec combination and playstyle is gone from the game.
I tend to agree with tlacoatl16's assessment of the Boomkin spec as well. Balance has become somewhat of a boring rotation as opposed to blasty fun it used to be. It definitely isn't as fun as the monk for me by a longshot these days, though it used to be my main.

Paladin

Paladins got much love, particularly the retribution specialization. I agree that ret is the most fun spec for pallies, making me feel uber while leveling. But the most passionate reason for loving the paladin came from get.sam.inbox for protection.

I feel that I can do anything. Before Mists, before active mitigation, I liked it well enough but I didn't mind main speccing Holy. Active mitigation turned a fun side line into my one true spec. I love tanking, I love soloing, I love living when I should die, I love the paladin lore, I love stepping forward to protect my friends. I love the tie in to my favourite movie (The Avengers) with 2 abilities. I love the utility of the class. I love the flavour of the class. I love how everything is useful.

Priest

Shadow and discipline specs got equal amount of love, with the holy spec being conspicuously absent. DanielWallin describes what's good about both specs:

My Shadowpriest have been my main since early vanilla and I've still not grown tired of him. It's something about melting faces that attracts my dark side i guess.

I mainly go disc in guild raids nowadays and I really find the damage mitigation aspect appealing. Just let the raid bathe in shiny Sprit Shell bubbles before incoming heavy raid damage. Love it. But I still prefer those fights when we drop a healer and I can go back to that face melting business.

Warlock

Love for the warlock was spread across all three specs. But etherraichu expresses what he likes about affliction.

But an affliction warlock drops all pretenses. He *could* use fire. He *could* summon demons. Instead, the affliction warlock intentionally delays the effects of their powers, simply to cause as much pain as they can to their enemy.

We are without a doubt, evil. Evil without question, without remorse. And despite all of that...

...You need us, and we know it. <3

Death Knight

DK specs were equally enjoyed as well. Ravyncat at Ravyn's Reliquary wrote a passionate piece about her love for the death knight.

They are fun to play and have interesting Lore. I like that they have two class specific mounts as well. Plus they come with their own badass instant transmog gear so you never have to look sloppy while leveling.

I could also say they make good tanks and soloers – and they do! – but mostly I love running around and bashing the crap out of stuff until it dies. Death Knights do this very well.

Monk

All three specs for the monk were represented amongst the favorites as well. Niwnamahs enthused about the brewmaster.

I LOVE my Brewmaster. So much. And not just because I can throw giant kegs of beer to generate massive amounts of threat, and then breath fire on multiple enemies at once.. The stagger and shuffle mechanics are very unique to tanking, and make my toon feel EXTREMELY powerful, even as a leather-wearer.

Rogue

Rogues received some affection across the specs, but Quandary over at A Gamer at Heart only liked what the subtlety rogue was like in Cataclysm.

If you got your rotation and finishers right, you'd be nothing special. The niche lay in using Shadowdance, Vanish and Preparation to maximise the expose weakness debuff at the right times (eg not before SnD was about to fall off) whilst executing everything else flawlessly. If done really well the damage meters would make you stand out but it was very difficult to do perfectly. It was that level of difficulty that I really liked.

Warrior

By far the least represented class was the warrior with the arms spec getting the most attention. AshCurtis has an explanation as to why the warrior is so low on the favorites list.

... if I am being honest warrior is feeling tired now, as a class. It's lack of utility and ability to look after itself infuriates me.

Refuse to choose!

Altoholism was rampant in the comments. JeffLaBowski at Sportsbard expressed it well.

Well, I have lots of favorite specs but for an altoholic, choosing a class is like going to a buffet and eating a salad. It can't be done!
That used to be how I felt before the monk and in fact I still do spread my time over several characters, but it's mostly spent these days over several monks. I guess it's still possible to be an altoholic and to love a single class -- you just end up with many alts from the same class.

It was entertaining to read all of the passionate descriptions of why everyone loves their chosen role. Tune in soon for the next Community Blog Topic. Breakfast Topic: Have you been a late adopter of any features?

Have you been a late adopter of any featuresWhen pet battles were first announced, I was pretty intrigued. I enjoyed collecting rare pets and mounts, and I usually had my my Kirin Tor Familiar or my Worg Pup out when I was running around. The idea of battling with them and getting even more pets was something I could get behind.

Then Mists of Pandaria came out, and there was always something else to do. I had do dailies, or do heroic dungeons, or raid, or do dailies on my tailoring alt so I could make Royal Satchels. It wasn't that I hated pet battles, it was just that I never seemed to have time for them.

Then patch 5.3 came out. I wasn't too thrilled with Battlefield Barrens, and you can only run Raid Finder Throne of Thunder so many times before it gets a little old. Thus, I decided to finally level that pandaren shaman that I had sitting in Westfall for months, and as I leveled her, I figured I might as well have her do some pet battles.

Here it is, a few weeks later. I'm up to 5 level 25 pets, 370 pet achievement points, and I've been parking alts in Felwood, Silithus, and even Gnomeregan in hopes of grabbing rare pets.

Do I regret not starting pet battles earlier? I don't think I do, really. I had fun with what I was doing before, and I'm really glad pet battles were here to give me a backup when I needed a break from those things. That said, I do sort of wish I had gotten into this a few months earlier, because now I have to wait half a year for that dang Snowy Owl.

What about you? Whether it's been in this expansion or just in general, is there some part of the game it took you a while to get into? Tags: featured, game-discussion, gamer-discussion, world-of-warcraft-discussion, world-of-warcraft-topics, wow-discussion, wow-hot-topics, wow-issues, wow-topics

Breakfast Topic: The leveling games we play

We've leveled a lot of characters in our day -- and I do mean a lot. So many, in fact, that leveling new ones can be such a snooze that we have to invent new challenges to make it interesting. So we create things like the Ironman Challenge, where death means you have to reroll. Perhaps to spice things up you're considering leveling your next alt purely through PvP, healing, or even daily quests.

Tell us, readers, are you playing any leveling games? I am personally considering leveling a new priest purely through healing dungeons for a change of pace... though we'll see how long it lasts before it just starts driving me nuts. Breakfast Topic: Do you PvP in patch 5.3?

Breakfast Topic Do you PvP in patch 53For those of you who aren't aware, patch 5.3, which we're in right now on live servers, brought about some huge changes to PvP gear. Basically, the key stat you used to gear for in PvP, Resilience, was taken off gear and made baseline for everyone. There's now no real need for PvP gear to get started in PvP, you can just use your PvE gear. And sure, you won't hit as hard, PvP Power means that PvP gear is still stronger, but you can definitely get started.

So I'm wondering whether you have. Have these changes encouraged you to start PvP? Are you considering it now, where you weren't before? Have you tried at all? Or are you still adamant that you won't PvP? Maybe you don't enjoy PvP for some other reason, and nothing on earth would get you to try it. Maybe you dropped out of the Legendary just because of those two battlegrounds. Whatever your take on this, particularly in my position as WoW Insider's PvP writer, I'm really interested to hear if the patch 5.3 changes have had any impact at all on your PvP habits!

Breakfast Topic: Your alt woes

While some prefer focusing on one character at a time, others thrive on the variety of alts, which can make for a nice change of pace to grinding away for experience or gear on a main character. But some players have raised the playing of an alt to something of an art: altaholics who play for both the alliance and the horde and have characters of all races across all level ranges. But even if you love them, alts are not without their problems. My biggest hurdle is my strange inability to remember which character I've logged on to, and automatically using the hotkeys for my monk when I'm playing my hunter. (I try to arrange my hotkeys so they're not foreign to me whatever I'm playing, but I always stumble nevertheless.)

But what about you, readers? Do you have any alt problems you're always running into? Or, better yet, alt solutions? Share! Breakfast Topic: What's the funniest quest in the game?

Breakfast Topic What's the funniest quest in the gameThis question was recently asked on the US forums, and WoW Insider thought it was such a great discussion topic that we'd ask our wonderful readers what they thought. So, as the title puts it, what's the funniest quest in the game?

Several commenters mentioned The Day that Deathwing Came in their replies on the general forums, but I have another Badlands quest for your consideration, and that is It's Goat Time, Baby. Yes, the stories were funny, and the realization that his motorbike could fly, and that it would have been helpful to know that sooner, are both highly entertaining. But, for me, punching goats off the side of Fuselight has that one beat seven ways since Sunday. I love it. I love punching the goats off the steep hills, I love that there's an achievement, Ready, Set, Goat!, for successfully punching the goats at high speed. I love that you get a goat-puncher to do it with. That an NPC actually went to the trouble of creating a specific device for the punching of goats. Everything about this quest is wonderful.

But enough about me and my goat-punching ways, what about you? What's your personal pet quest? What tickles your fancy?

Breakfast Topic: Coming back to WoW

Sometimes you just need a WoW break, whether it's a day, a week, a month, or even longer. And though stepping away from your gaming friends can be tough, coming back can be even tougher. Have you missed a patch? Several patches? An entire expansion? The game world around you may have changed, your class may have changed, your friends may have advanced past you, your guild may have disbanded. You may find yourself starting anew, and while sometimes that's just what you need to keep the game fresh, sometimes it's just a hassle you don't want. (Trust me, I'm speaking from experience as someone who took a couple of years off.)

So tell us, have you ever taken a WoW vacation? For how long? And how did you deal with getting back into the game when you returned? Tags: featured, game-discussion, gamer-discussion, world-of-warcraft-discussion, world-of-warcraft-topics, wow-discussion, wow-hot-topics, wow-issues, wow-topics

Breakfast Topic: How did you choose your guild?

The people you play with make up the heart and soul of your World of Warcraft experience. They'll make the game a delight you keep coming back to or a misery you can't escape soon enough. What this comes down to is that who you're guilded with makes or breaks your game experience. A bad guild or, worse, a good guild that's falling apart will make you rush offline to a good book or a favorite TV show rather than spending your idle time in Azeroth. Of course, it's not always straightforward to find the right guild for you -- it's all too easy to have mismatched goals or schedules that turn what may have seemed to be a great group of players into a guild nightmare.

When I'm in need of a guild, I tend to follow my friends around, which always seems like a good formula but doesn't always work out. But it's hardly the only way: all you have to do is be unguilded to get numerous (unsolicited) guild invitations and the guild recruitment forum is always brimming with new guilds LFM. So, just how do you go about picking that perfect guild? Breakfast Topic: What are the songs?

Breakfast Topic What are the songsOne of the nice things about Tolkien's expansive universe -- both the one he created and the ones expanded upon by others -- is the rich, beautiful music. Whether it's a plate-tossing tune or an orcish battle chant, the world of Tolkien is rife with music. Even Game of Thrones has more than a few ditties, even if you need to be a little creative to find them. But we don't have that some musical background in WoW.

Don't get me wrong: WoW has some fantastic theme music. Between the Arkenstone-penned backgrounds or thematic zone music, Azeroth has plenty of musical ambiance. But it doesn't have a lot of songs with lyrics, or folk tunes, or those little sing-along moments that make a world so vibrant. You have to reach for filk or machinima to get much of that. And sure, there's the Chieftans but that's not quite the same as "music of the world."

The game references music, though. It's out there. So, I ask you, dear breakfast readers, to put fingers to keyboards and try out your Azerothian muse. What's the music you would add to game? Is it just battle chants? What about something with a nice flute? What would the music of Azeroth sound like? Community Blog Topic: What is your favorite class and spec?

Community Blog Topic What is your favorite class and specFor most of my WoW career, my main character and first love was a druid. I particularly liked the balance spec even when it wasn't fashionable to do so. I still like my druid, but she is not even close to my favorite character. I've leveled paladins and mages, priests and shamans. I've toyed with hunters and warlocks. But the class that I love the best now is most definitely the monk.

I haven't felt this way towards a class in a game since my bard in Everquest. Well, that's true for fantasy characters. I also adore my operative in Star Wars: The Old Republic. But for World of Warcraft, my true love is the monk. I played with the brewmaster a bit, but while I like the spec, I'm not overly fond of tanking, so it's not quite for me. It's easier to do solo questing and dailies on my windwalker so that is the spec I play the most, but my favorite is the mistweaver. I enjoy the different healing mechanics of the monk and I feel I do a good job with them.

I love everything about the monk: the fun glyphs, the animations, and of course the skills. I also love how easy she is to play. I struggle a bit on mediocre gear doing the Tiller dailies on my other characters, but my monk with the same gear breezes right through them. It's hard playing my other characters, even though I have two other 90s and a mage in her 80s.

The monk is for me.

What is your favorite class/spec and why? Has it changed over your time playing WoW?
